Anonymous asked: Yeah how do you make your circlets. Sorry autocorrect.

Well first I have a consultation with the person who wants the circlet. We discuss shapes, sizing, materials, pattern, motifs, gems, price range, etc., come to an agreement, if I don’t have specific elements that they would like, I order the stuff for the chosen pattern, it gets delivered and I start work on the actual crown/circlet.

Band is cut to measure the person that the circlet is for. The ends are sometimes drilled for laces and every edge is hand finished for smoothness and safety. If the customer wanted vines, vines are cut, shaped, hammered and finished.
Sometimes I have to cut out the motif by hand with a fine saw or I have to make things that cant be found anywhere else. The chosen pattern is soldered on by hand, using a high temperature solder because they have to be very secure.
Soldering flux is cleaned off with a brass brush, soap and water. The circlet then goes into the tumbler with different mediums until it gets shiny. It gets cleaned with ceramic abrasives and soapy water until all of the fire stains are gone. The heat from the torch discolors the brass and it’s the best way to clean it without damaging the pattern. This is a tricky time because the tumbler can sometimes  damage the circlet if it gets stuck and rubs in one place for too long, it can wear a hole in the metal, so it needs to be on the perfect settings and checked on constantly.
After this cleaning everything is quality checked to be sure its secure, each soldered point is specifically checked to make sure they won’t come loose. Once it gets the OK it is bent into a head shaped oval and fitted for comfort. Solder points are checked again to make sure they’re not loosened by the stress of bending and all of the edges are rechecked for smoothness.
Only then are the cabochon glass/stones set into the settings. The whole circlet is polished with a high speed cotton polishing wheel, while wearing all of the proper protective gear, solder points checked again and the whole thing is cleaned again with soapy water and a brass brush. The wheel is very fast and dangerous, it spins over 50 times a second and can pull whatever I’m polishing right out of my hands and destroy it.

Then it is hand polished with a polishing cloth and all of the vines are wrapped properly around the band and tweaked so they’re in the proper position. Once it is given this last inspection, the laces are put in and the circlet is finished and placed into a plastic zipper bag to keep it from tarnishing.

It is then sent to the happy new customer! I use a lot of these same steps while making other handmade things of mine too.
